about

"Cam Ye O'er Frae France" dates from the early 18th century. Think of it as a protest song if you like.

When England's Queen Ann died, her husband George I ascended to the throne. George was NOT English, Scottish or anything else even vaguely British. If I tell you he was sometimes called "German George", that should tell you something.

Some folks weren't quite thrilled with that development.

Add to that the fact that the behaviour of the nobility George brought with him was something less than highly moral, and you've got an environment ripe for barbed commentary at the very least.

Of course, leveling such criticisms at the Crown could get you accused of treason.

To resolve this dilemma, references to the nobility were shrouded in code.

For that reason, this has been called a "riddle song".

Add to that the fact that the lyrics are Scots English, and you may find that the meanings are a bit obscure.

I explain some coded references and terms in the liner notes for the full CD.
